So today was my equivalent of cold water swimming I guess, with possibly some benefits to physical and mental health.
The Himalayan is fairly well suited to winter roads, and mild mannered enough not to be intimidating. Had I taken the Mad Orange Thing out today (Yamaha MT-09) the story would probably have had more serious outcome than cold toes!
I set out without a destination in mind, and found enough slippery stuff to ensure that I focused on what I was doing - a kind of enforced mindfulness, being fully present in the moment.
The Mad Orange Thing (which I love but have likened to a bad tempered adolescent bear with a hangover) would quite possibly have spat me off today. In fact I wouldn't have even taken it out...always good to have a range of tools.
I love riding with people I know and trust. I'm less keen on riding with those I don't - people can be unpredictable, and committed mid-corner is not a good time to be reminded of this. Today I was on my own - it's a different experience, and I have travelled many many thousands of miles this way.
Wiltshire never disappoints with scenery - my ride took in Silbury Hill and Avebury, are special places for me.
Many people do not ride through the winter, and this may be very rational! For me the benefits are multiple - getting out on two wheels is good for my head and my heart, and it means that come the summer when I am trying to tame the adolescent bear (and probably my own inner adolescent) that my skills and muscle memory are much more current than they would otherwise be.
For all of you who do ride, be it some of the year or all of it, keep it shiny side up. For those who don't...you should try it :)
